Brown Lentils

Brown lentils are the highest-volume whole lentil in world trade, contracted for soup and canning demand and as feedstock for dehulling into red lentils.

The brown lentil is the same species as the red, and the whole red lentil is in commercial terms a brown-coated seed. What distinguishes a brown lentil contract is that it stays whole and coated, so coat colour evenness and skin integrity are the parameters judged.

Mixed or patchy coat colour is the most visible defect in a whole brown lot.
Size uniformity
