Red Lentils

Red lentils are contracted in two forms from the same crop: whole with the seed coat on, and dehulled and split as the salmon-orange lentil most retail and milling buyers mean by the name.

The whole red lentil carries a brown seed coat over a red cotyledon. Dehulling removes that coat and reveals the colour buyers recognise; splitting then separates the seed into halves. Which form a buyer contracts depends entirely on their process.

What decides quality in red lentils

Colour
Brightness of the cotyledon, against an approved sample. Dull or faded lots are discounted.
Split percentage
For split lots, the share of clean halves against broken and powdered material.
Foreign matter and stone
Lentils are low-growing and pick up soil and stone, so destoning is checked on the composite sample.

Third-party inspection can be nominated at the loading point — sampling, analysis, weight verification and loading supervision. Quality and processing in full.
