Dry peas are Pisum sativum, traded in four commercial forms: whole green, whole yellow, and the dehulled split of each. A whole pea and a split pea are different products with different buyers — a canner contracts the whole, a dal mill or soup manufacturer the split — so each carries its own page, specification and price.
Origin matters here more than for the beans and pulses grown across the region. The world dry pea trade is Canadian, Russian and European; within East Africa, Ethiopia is the one origin producing at commercial scale, with highland production in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda that is largely consumed regionally. Origin is stated on every offer rather than assumed from the rest of the catalogue.

Whole against split
Splitting dehulls the pea and separates it into halves. The commercial parameter that follows is split percentage — the share of clean whole halves against broken and powdered material — and it depends on the whole pea the lot was produced from, which is why it is confirmed against the offered lot rather than promised in advance.
A whole pea contract is judged instead on colour and size uniformity: colour because faded seed is discounted on sight, size because it governs both swell in canning and recovery in splitting.
What "field peas" means in a contract
Field peas and dry peas are group names, not specifications. Both cover the four products on this page, and neither tells a supplier what to load. An enquiry that says "field peas" gets a clarifying question; one that says whole yellow peas, 25 kg PP, a stated size band and a destination port gets an offer.

Are field peas and dry peas the same thing?
They are two names for the same broad group — the dried seed of Pisum sativum, as opposed to the fresh garden pea. Neither is a contractable specification on its own: the products are whole green, whole yellow, green split and yellow split.
Are green lentils a type of pea?
No, and the two are regularly confused. Lentils are Lens culinaris, a flat disc-shaped seed; peas are Pisum sativum and round. They cook differently and are contracted separately.
