South Africa is a significant consumer of speckled beans — the light speckled kidney type known locally as sugar beans — and of red kidney beans, and it imports when domestic production falls short. It is one of the few destinations where East African bean origins compete on a short logistics leg rather than a long ocean one.
Buyers are importers, packers and processors supplying the retail and food service trade. Colour, speckle pattern and size are assessed closely because much of the product reaches consumers in a transparent retail pack.

- Depending on origin and volume, cargo may move by sea or overland. Each has different transit, cost and documentation implications and should be compared per shipment.
