Sourcing in Uganda

Uganda is one of the larger common bean producers in East Africa and a consistent supplier into the regional trade. Bimodal rainfall over most of the country gives two cropping seasons in a calendar year, which spreads availability more evenly than a single-harvest origin and shortens the gap between old and new crop.

Beans dominate the commercial picture, with cowpeas and pigeon peas produced mainly in the north and east.

Uganda is landlocked, so export cargo moves either east through Kenya to Mombasa on the Northern Corridor or south through Tanzania to Dar es Salaam on the Central Corridor. The corridor choice affects transit time, cost and documentation, and is normally decided per shipment rather than fixed.

Container loading and inspection
Container stuffing may take place inland in Uganda or at a facility near the load port. Where inspection is required, the location is agreed in advance because it determines where the inspector attends.
Contracting
Two harvests a year mean crop year and season need to be stated together when contracting, not just the year.
