Sourcing in Uganda

Uganda is one of the larger common bean producers in East Africa and a consistent supplier into the regional trade. Bimodal rainfall over most of the country gives two cropping seasons in a calendar year, which spreads availability more evenly than a single-harvest origin and shortens the gap between old and new crop.

Beans dominate the commercial picture, with cowpeas and pigeon peas produced mainly in the north and east.

Crop timing may vary by region, rainfall patterns and growing season. Windows shown are indicative and should be confirmed against current-season availability before contracting.

No seasonal window is published yet for Lablab Beans (Hyacinth Beans). Those commodities are sourced from Uganda, but the timing has not been recorded here — ask and we will give the current position.

Logistics

How cargo reaches the ship

Collection in the producing regions, movement overland, and loading at the export gateway.

Uganda is landlocked, so export cargo moves either east through Kenya to Mombasa on the Northern Corridor or south through Tanzania to Dar es Salaam on the Central Corridor. The corridor choice affects transit time, cost and documentation, and is normally decided per shipment rather than fixed.

  1. Step 1

    Origin collection

    3 producing zones in Uganda

Volume is assembled in the producing regions, then cleaned and graded before it is packed.

    • Northern Uganda
    • Eastern Uganda
    • Western and south-western Uganda
  2. Step 2

    Inland transport

    2 corridors

The corridor is normally chosen per shipment against transit time, cost and equipment availability rather than fixed in advance.

    • Northern Corridor
    • Central Corridor
  3. Step 3

    Export gateway

    Uganda is landlocked

Cargo crosses a border under transit procedures and loads at a port in Kenya or Tanzania.

    • Mombasa — Kenya
    • Dar es Salaam — Tanzania

What this means for your shipment

Transit movement
Cargo is trucked to the load port under transit procedures, which adds documentation and border-crossing time compared with a coastal origin.
Container loading and inspection
Container stuffing may take place inland in Uganda or at a facility near the load port. Where inspection is required, the location is agreed in advance because it determines where the inspector attends.
Contracting
Two harvests a year mean crop year and season need to be stated together when contracting, not just the year.

Route alternatives

Northern Corridor
Kampala to Mombasa through Kenya. The shorter route for much of southern and central Uganda.
Central Corridor
Kampala or the lake regions to Dar es Salaam through Tanzania.

Delivery terms, third-party inspection and the export document set do not change by origin.
