The UAE functions less as an end market for pulses than as a distribution point. Cargo arrives at Jebel Ali, is stored, sometimes repacked, and moves on to the Gulf states, to South Asia and back into African markets. For an exporter, that changes what matters: transit time and reliability of shipment dates carry more weight than they would with an end user, because the buyer is managing a position rather than a production line.
The buyer base is dominated by trading houses and repackers. Repacking demand means bag presentation, consistent size grading and colour uniformity get scrutinised closely, and buyer-branded packing is more common than at origins selling into milling markets.
Direct consumption is real but smaller, driven by a large resident population from South Asia and the wider region, which supports demand for pigeon peas, mung beans, chickpeas and black-eyed beans in retail packs.

- Product that will be repacked for retail is assessed on colour uniformity, size consistency and freedom from visible defects, which usually means a colour-sorted specification rather than machine cleaned alone.
- Schedule reliability
- Trading buyers hold positions against onward sales. A slipped shipment date has a direct commercial cost for them, so realistic loading windows are worth more than optimistic ones.
- Re-export documentation
- Where cargo is destined for onward movement, the buyer may need origin documentation in a particular form. Confirm requirements before the certificate of origin is issued, because reissuing it after shipment is difficult.
