East African Pulse & Bean Origins
Nine origins across East and Southern Africa, each with its own production regions, harvest windows, commercial varieties and export routing. Tanzania carries the deepest coverage because it is the region's primary pulse origin.
East Africa is not one origin. A pigeon pea from the northern Tanzanian highlands, a green gram from the central Tanzanian plateau and a speckled bean from the Rwandan highlands are produced under different rainfall patterns, harvested in different months, moved through different corridors and loaded at different ports. Treating them as interchangeable is the most common mistake in sourcing from the region.
What the origins share is a smallholder production base. Volume is assembled through village aggregation, district markets and warehouse operators, which means lot-to-lot variation at farm level is real and the consistency of a finished consignment depends on the discipline applied at buying, intake and cleaning.
Origin pages are published only where there is genuinely distinct content to write: production regions, crop seasons, commercial varieties, processing, inland logistics, ports, packaging, inspection and destination markets. That is a deliberate limit — a page for every country a bean might theoretically come from would be thin content dressed as coverage.
