Pakistan consumes pulses at scale and imports to cover the shortfall between domestic production and demand. Mung beans and chickpeas are the most commercially relevant lines for an East African supplier, with pigeon peas traded in smaller volumes than in India.

The buyer base is made up of importer-traders and processors clearing through Karachi and Port Qasim, from where product is distributed inland. As in India, the commercial focus is on what the lot yields after cleaning and processing rather than on presentation alone.

Import requirements, duty treatment and any registration or inspection conditions must be confirmed for the current period with the buyer's clearing agent and the competent authority. They are not stated here because they change.

Buyer requirements

What buyers in this market assess

Practical considerations for structuring an offer. None of this is legal, tariff or regulatory advice.
Specification is negotiated on sample
Buyers commonly approve against a drawn sample as well as a written specification. Sending a representative sample early shortens the negotiation.
Size grading on mung beans
Size band is a routine part of the contract for mung beans and should be agreed before pricing, since it determines the grading pass required.
Payment terms
Letters of credit remain common. Where an L/C is used, the documentary requirements should be reviewed against what can actually be produced at the origin before the credit is opened.

Confirm before contracting. Import duty, quantitative restrictions, registration requirements, permitted treatments and phytosanitary conditions are set by the importing country and change over time. Nothing on this page states the requirement in force for any route. Verify the current position with your own customs broker and the competent authority.
