Dry Beans

Dark Red Kidney Beans

Dark red kidney beans from Tanzanian and Ethiopian origins, contracted on count per 100 g with colour depth approved against sample.

Dark red kidney beans are distinguished from the lighter red type by the depth and saturation of the seed coat. That single characteristic is what buyers pay for, and it is why the two are contracted separately rather than treated as grades of one product. A buyer who has built a retail pack or a canned line around a deep red colour cannot substitute the lighter type without their customer noticing.

  • SizeContracted as count per 100 g.
  • GMO statusThere are no commercially cultivated genetically modified varieties of this crop.
  • Colour depth is the defining commercial parameter and is approved on sample.

Quality and trade

Quality and export documentation

What decides quality in dark red kidney

Colour depth
The defining parameter. Approved on sample and affected by both variety and time in storage.
Size (count per 100 g)
Contracted as a band and confirmed against the current crop.
Crop year
Colour fades with age, so crop year is a commercial parameter for this type in particular.
Moisture
Commonly 14% max, tightened where transit and destination humidity justify it.
Admixture
Lighter red or other bean types are conspicuous in a dark red lot.
Broken and damaged seed
Large seed takes handling damage; splits reduce the visual grade.

Third-party inspection can be nominated at the loading point — sampling, analysis, weight verification and loading supervision. Quality and processing in full.

More on dark red kidney

Colour depth varies with variety and with growing conditions, and it fades gradually in storage. Both facts push in the same direction: the type should be approved on a sample from the crop being offered, and the crop year should be stated in the contract. A lot that looked right at harvest may present differently after a long period in store.

East African supply comes principally from Tanzania, with Ethiopian material available from the highland and Rift Valley bean areas. Volumes are smaller than for the light speckled type, so lot size and shipment timing should be checked early in the enquiry.

Otherwise the commercial parameters follow the kidney bean pattern: size contracted as count per 100 g, moisture commonly at 14% max and tightened for long transits, tight admixture tolerance because other colours stand out, and colour sorting where the product goes to a retail-facing channel.

Also traded as DRKB · dark red beans. These are trade names for the same commodity and are covered by this page rather than split across separate listings.

Frequently asked questions

By colour depth. Dark red kidney beans have a deeper, more saturated seed coat than the lighter red type. Buyers specify one or the other because the difference is visible in the finished pack or can, and the two price differently.
