Tanzania is the origin most international buyers of East African pigeon peas end up dealing with, and for good reasons that are structural rather than promotional. It produces the crop at scale across several distinct zones, it has a long-established export trade in it, and it loads at a deep-water port on the Indian Ocean without the cargo crossing an international border. For a buyer in India, Pakistan or the Gulf, that combination of volume and directness is difficult to match elsewhere in the region.

The country's pigeon pea production is concentrated in two broad areas. The northern belt around Babati in Manyara Region, extending into parts of Arusha, is the most established zone and the one with the deepest export orientation — this is where much of the crop has historically been grown specifically for the international market rather than for local consumption. The southern regions, principally Lindi, Mtwara and Ruvuma, together with parts of Morogoro, add substantial volume in a broadly similar window.

Production is smallholder-based and frequently intercropped with maize or sorghum, which has two consequences worth understanding. First, farm-level lot sizes are small, so a container is assembled from many separate purchases and the discipline applied at buying and intake determines how consistent the finished consignment is. Second, the crop is harvested with variable moisture and variable field trash, which makes conditioning and cleaning an integral part of producing an export specification rather than an optional finishing step.

Long-duration varieties dominate the northern belt. They are planted with the main rains around December and January and harvested from roughly June through September, with the peak of the marketing season falling in the middle of that window. Shipments continue for several months afterwards from stored crop. Short-duration material can come to market earlier, and rainfall variation moves the whole pattern year to year, which is why any calendar for this origin should be read as indicative.

Sourcing areas

The northern belt — Babati and the wider Manyara Region, with adjoining districts of Arusha — is the reference zone for Tanzanian pigeon peas. It has the longest history of export-oriented production, the most developed aggregation trade, and the closest links to cleaning capacity.

The southern regions of Lindi, Mtwara and Ruvuma contribute significant volume, with the option of loading through Mtwara for suitable cargo, although most volume still moves by road to Dar es Salaam. Morogoro and parts of Dodoma and Tabora add further supply.

Buying runs through village aggregators, district markets and warehouse operators. The widest choice of colour type, size and crop-fresh material exists while the harvest is actively moving; as the season progresses the choice narrows and the residual market is increasingly carry-over stock.

Crop seasons

Planting follows the main rains, broadly December to February in the principal zones. Harvest runs from around June to September, with peak availability generally in July to September and the export window extending from mid-year into the final months of the calendar.

Rainfall onset and variety duration move these windows. A late start to the rains delays everything downstream, and an early one brings the crop forward. Treat the calendar as a planning tool and confirm the current-season position before committing to a shipment date.

Cleaning and export preparation

Crop arriving from the buying points is sampled and checked for moisture, foreign matter, insect activity and admixture before it is accepted. Material above the moisture target for the intended contract is conditioned before it enters the cleaning line, because moisture is the one parameter that cannot be corrected once the container is sealed.

The cleaning sequence is pre-cleaning, aspiration, screening, destoning and gravity separation, with colour sorting added where the specification requires it. Gravity separation does the important work on this commodity: bruchid-damaged grain keeps its dimensions and can only be removed on density.

Processing may take place at owned, contracted or partner-operated facilities depending on volume, location and season. Where a buyer needs a specific capability — colour sorting at a particular intensity, metal detection, a specific packing format — it is confirmed for the nominated processing point before the contract is concluded rather than assumed.

Inland logistics and containerisation

Cargo moves by road from the producing regions to the cleaning and stuffing point and then to the port. Road weight limits on the corridor, rather than the physical capacity of the container, are frequently what determines the planned net weight per unit.

Containers are stuffed either at the packing point or at a container freight station near Dar es Salaam, depending on volume, cleaning location and whether independent inspection has been instructed. Where an inspector will attend, the stuffing location is agreed in advance so that attendance can be scheduled.

Peak season brings congestion. When several crops come to market together, trucking, cleaning capacity and equipment availability tighten at the same time, and shipment dates need to be planned with that in mind rather than assumed.

Export ports

Dar es Salaam is the default load port and offers the widest range of services to South Asian, Gulf, Turkish and European destinations. Mtwara is available for cargo sourced in the far south where volumes and service schedules justify it, and Tanga serves a smaller role in the north.

Documentation and inspection

The standard document set — commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin, phytosanitary certificate and bill of lading — accompanies the shipment, with fumigation, weight, quality and inspection certificates added where the buyer, the letter of credit or the destination requires them.

Phytosanitary certification is issued by the national plant health authority following inspection of the consignment, and certificates of origin by the recognised chamber of commerce. Procedures and lead times should be confirmed for each shipment rather than assumed from a previous one.

Where independent verification is required, an inspection company nominated by the buyer or agreed between the parties can be appointed to sample, test against contract, verify weight and supervise stuffing.

Destination markets for Tanzanian pigeon peas

India is the dominant destination, buying whole tur for dal milling. The Gulf, principally through the UAE, takes volume for distribution and repacking. European and North American demand is smaller and oriented to diaspora retail, where the pea is cooked whole. Pakistan and Bangladesh buy in more variable quantities.
