How Harvest Seasons Affect Pulse Pricing

Pulse prices at origin move for the reasons every agricultural price moves — crop size, competing demand, currency, freight — but the seasonal pattern within a single year has its own logic, and it is the part a buyer can actually plan around. Understanding it is worth more than watching a price series, because it explains not just what the price is doing but what is available at that price.
The shape of a season
Harvest and early marketing
As the crop comes in, volume in the buying regions is at its highest and farmers and aggregators are selling. This is when the widest choice exists: colour types can be segregated, size bands are gradeable because there is enough material to grade from, and everything on offer is genuinely new crop. Prices at origin are typically at their most competitive relative to the rest of the season, and cleaning capacity is the constraint rather than supply.
Peak availability
Shortly after harvest, the market has depth: enough volume has been assembled to fill contracts quickly, quality is well understood because samples are circulating, and the export machinery is running. This is usually the best window for a buyer who needs a specific specification, because there is enough material to select from.
Mid-season
Stocks in the producing regions draw down. The material still available is increasingly held by traders rather than farmers, which changes the price dynamic — holders have a cost of carry and a view, and they price accordingly. Choice narrows: the more attractive colour types and larger size bands go first, and what remains is skewed towards what was harder to sell.
Late season and the gap
Before the next harvest, availability is thin and increasingly carry-over. Prices frequently firm, and the quality question shifts from specification to condition — how the material has been stored, what its insect load looks like, whether colour has held. This is where crop year discipline earns its keep.
Unimodal and bimodal origins behave differently

Because East Africa contains both patterns, the region as a whole has a more continuous supply picture than any single origin within it. That is genuinely useful for a buyer trying to space purchases — but only if the origins are treated as separate products with separate approvals, because appearance and size differ between them.
Demand-side timing
The other half of the equation sits in the destination. Pigeon pea pricing in East Africa responds to the size of the Indian tur crop and to Indian buying activity, which follows its own agricultural calendar. Bean pricing responds to the domestic harvest in importing markets — South African demand for speckled beans moves with the local crop. A purchase timed well against the origin harvest but badly against destination demand can still be a poor trade.
Practical planning
- Work backwards from when you need the goods, allowing for the export window rather than the harvest date.
- Open the conversation before the harvest, not after it, if you need a specific specification.
- Ask what the crop looks like this season, not just what the price is — size distribution and colour vary year to year.
- Where you buy repeatedly, consider splitting across two origins with different windows.
