Cowpeas
Red Cowpeas
Red and reddish-brown cowpea types serving defined regional and diaspora demand.

Red cowpeas are a distinct commercial line rather than a colour grade sorted out of the white crop. The seed runs from a light red through to reddish-brown, and the type is grown deliberately for markets that specifically want it — regional African demand and diaspora retail in particular, where the colour is part of the dish being cooked rather than an incidental characteristic.
Volumes are smaller than for the white type and availability is more seasonal, so quantity and shipment window should be established early in an enquiry. Aggregating a full container of a consistent red type takes longer than the equivalent white volume, and lead times should reflect that.
On the quality side, the advantages and disadvantages of a coloured seed coat both apply. Discolouration and staining are less conspicuous than on a white cowpea, which relaxes one constraint. But admixture works in the opposite direction: a white or black-eyed seed in a red lot is immediately visible, so segregation through buying, storage and cleaning is what protects the value of the lot.
Insect damage is the same issue as for every cowpea type and is managed the same way — density separation on the line, and storage discipline before it.
Sourcing and availability
Red types come from the same broad producing areas as white cowpeas, principally in Tanzania with additional volume from neighbouring origins. Because the trade is thinner, availability should be confirmed against the current crop rather than assumed from the fact that the type is grown.
Specification considerations
- Colour tone: approve against a sample, since "red" covers a range from light red to reddish-brown.
- Admixture of white or black-eyed seed: conspicuous, and normally the tightest parameter.
- Insect damage: managed by gravity separation and by storage discipline.
- Moisture: typically 12% max.
- Availability: smaller and more seasonal than the white type.

Notes on specific parameters
- Crop year — Contract on a specific crop year; it materially affects colour, cooking behaviour and insect load.
- Admixture — Other cowpea colours and types.
- Insect damaged — Bruchid activity is the main quality risk in cowpeas; storage and treatment matter as much as cleaning.
- GMO status — There are no commercially cultivated genetically modified varieties of this crop.
- Colour sorted specification available where the buyer requires a higher visual grade.
Specifications shown are indicative contract parameters used across the trade. They are not laboratory results and are not a guarantee attaching to any particular lot. The specification that governs a shipment is the one written into its contract, agreed against the buyer’s requirement and, where appearance matters, against an approved sample.
Frequently asked questions
Are red cowpeas the same as red kidney beans?
No. Red cowpeas are Vigna unguiculata, a smaller seed with a different shape, cooking behaviour and buyer base. Red kidney beans are Phaseolus vulgaris. The two are not interchangeable and are contracted separately.
Is red cowpea availability consistent?
Less so than for the white type. Volumes are smaller and the trade is thinner, so aggregating a consistent container takes longer. Confirm quantity and shipment window against the current crop.
