East African Chickpea Origins

Chickpeas occupy a different position in East Africa from the other pulses on this site. Where pigeon peas, mung beans, cowpeas and dry beans are produced across many countries in the region, chickpea production is concentrated overwhelmingly in one: Ethiopia. Any serious conversation about East African chickpeas starts there, and the other origins are supplementary.

Ethiopia produces both Kabuli and Desi types at commercial scale across the highlands of Amhara and Oromia. Much of the crop is grown on residual soil moisture after the main Meher rains rather than under the rains themselves, which is why the harvest falls at the end of the calendar year and the export season runs through the first months of the following one. There is an established processing and export trade around the crop, and Ethiopian chickpeas have a long history in international markets.

Tanzania grows chickpeas in the northern highland districts — the Karatu and Babati areas and parts of Singida — but at volumes that are modest against Ethiopia. Availability, type and size band from this origin should be confirmed before being quoted rather than assumed from the fact that the crop exists there.

The logistical picture differs sharply between the two. Ethiopia is landlocked and its container traffic moves by road to Djibouti, which is effectively its single maritime gateway; corridor capacity and turnaround are therefore real scheduling variables.
